Tutoring and Student Resources

Learning Resource Center

At UMass Amherst’s  Learning Resource Center (LRC), there are three different branches of academic support available to undergraduate students, including Course-based Tutoring (drop-in and by appointment), Study Skills Tutoring, and group review sessions or Supplemental Instruction (SI).  

Course-based Tutoring

Course-based Tutoring supports students as they work through questions and curiosities related to specific class content.  Course-based tutoring also helps students formalize understanding, fill in learning gaps, clarify misconceptions, and gain academic confidence. The LRC provides course-based tutoring for over 150 classes each semester.  Tutoring is offered by appointment and through drop-in.

Study Skills Tutoring

Study Skills Tutoring supports students as they develop skills related to the process (or the “how”) of learning.  Instead of working on specific areas of content, students use study skills tutoring to hone and expand their time management and organizational skills, explore new and different study strategies, and discover an array of tools to help them build academic confidence and competency.  

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders are exceptional students who have excelled in their respective courses. Twice a week, SI Leaders hold review sessions for their peers. Leaders attend class and coordinate with faculty to develop weekly worksheets while working for the LRC. As a part of Team LRC, SI leaders attend training sessions to develop facilitation and pedagogical skills. SI Leaders model successful student behavior and assist other students achieve academic success. 

 

Chemistry Resource Center (CRC)

Graduate Student TA's host office hours in the Chemistry Resource Center (CRC) and are available to answer questions about lecture and lab material covered in their sections.

Career Services

Center for Counseling and Psychological Health

Interdisciplinary counseling service, staffed by licensed mental health providers, including social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and clinical nurse specialists.

A student-centered learning agency within the division of Advocacy, Equity and Inclusion in Student Affairs and Campus Life.

Dean of Students

Assists students through advocacy program support, advising, and general counseling.

The Dean of Students Office provides students with the support, resources, and referrals they need to succeed at the University.

Services include:

• Serving as a single point of contact within the University for students and their families in time of crisis
• Consultation and referrals for students contemplating withdrawal from, or re-enrollment at, the University
• Implementing and monitoring the University Conduct Process
• Providing short-term loans for students
• Supporting students through the Massachusetts Residency Reclassification process
• Overseeing Off Campus Student Life, the University's HelpLine, and the Student Services Committee

Disability Services
