About the GCA

The Graduate Chemists' Association (GCA) at UMass Amherst serves as a vital hub for fostering unity and celebrating diversity within the department. Beyond academic pursuits, it provides a nurturing environment where graduate students can express themselves and find a sense of community.

Throughout the year, GCA organizes a variety of events aimed at bringing students and faculty together. One such event is the Winter Potluck, a collaborative effort with the DEI Committee where members share culinary delights from their respective cultures, fostering cross-cultural exchange and camaraderie.

In addition to fostering a sense of community, GCA is deeply committed to service and philanthropy. The annual Penny War and Food Drive exemplify this commitment and an integral part of the bigger pledge of “UMassGives,” providing support to local survival centers and underserved communities. Moreover, GCA promotes creativity and collaboration through initiatives such as apparel design, allowing students to showcase their artistic talents while creating unique pieces that reflect the diversity of the department. As the semester draws to a close, GCA hosts a highly anticipated game night exclusively for students, offering a well-deserved break from academic pressures and an opportunity for socializing and bonding.

In essence, GCA plays a crucial role in promoting inclusivity, supporting mental well-being, and fostering a sense of belonging among graduate students at UMass Amherst.
