Vision

UMass Amherst campus

Chancellor's Vision

Since our founding in 1863, UMass Amherst has been driven by a dedication to serving the common good. This unwavering commitment runs deep and underlies all that we do—our teaching, research, and engagement in the community.

As a public, land-grant university, UMass Amherst is proud to welcome high-achieving students from all backgrounds to our campus who join our talented faculty in the pursuit of research, scholarship, and creative activity that help to advance scientific discovery, promote technological innovation, support the health and well-being of our communities, and drive our economy forward.

As both a higher education leader and an economist, I know the transformative impact that public higher education can have in fostering broad-based economic prosperity and driving social mobility. Building upon a sustained legacy of excellence, we will fuel a pipeline of talent and inspire future leaders across the commonwealth and beyond. As one of the largest employers in western Massachusetts, UMass Amherst generates $2.9 billion in direct and indirect impact on the state’s economy and supports more than 13,000 external jobs.

We are committed to Massachusetts’s success and know that we can do more to ensure that UMass continues to provide a robust pipeline of highly talented workers, drive innovation, attract industry, support start-ups, expand economic opportunity, and be an engine of growth to fuel a prosperous future of the commonwealth and beyond.

Go UMass!

UMass Strategic Plan

For the Common Good: Strategic Plan 2024–2034

To achieve our goals, we are guided by three overarching, campuswide strategic priorities. These priorities guide us throughout our decision-making processes and provide focus for our actions.
