The University of Massachusetts Amherst has emerged over the last decade as a world-class locus of research and scholarship. The UMass system's flagship campus is classified as a Doctoral University with Highest Research Activity by the Carnegie Foundation.

Research expenditures of more than $200 million per year placed UMass Amherst 25th among public research institutions without medical schools in FY 2022 (NSF Higher Education Research and Development Survey). These funds support the research and creative activity of more than 1,300 faculty, 6,500 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and a large number of undergraduates engaged in research.

The success of our research programs reflects the faculty's innovative approaches to research, which in turn is reflected in the many excellent research centers and interdisciplinary institutes on our campus. These hubs of activity increase the relevance of our research and create new areas of study, many of them important to the social and economic vitality of Massachusetts and the nation.

As we enjoy success, there is much to do to advance the campus to the top tier of public research universities. I am honored to have this opportunity to help faculty, students, and staff grow their research programs and to further the campus's mutually beneficial engagement with public and private partners. I am especially excited that recent and ongoing construction projects are providing significant new facilities for research, which will accelerate our growth.

The Office of Research and Engagement provides services in support of growth and expansion of research and scholarship on the UMass Amherst campus. These include staff in the offices of Pre-Award ServicesPost-Award ManagementTechnology Transfer OfficeResearch DevelopmentResearch ComplianceUMass Innovation InstituteProject Management & TrainingResearch IT Systems, and the University Press.
