UMass Amherst has been a campus engaged in community service since its inception over 150 years ago. In more recent history, since 1994, over 160 faculty members have taught courses integrating service-learning as a text for student learning. CESL is here to help UMass faculty and instructors design community-engaged courses, form meaningful and reciprocal community partnerships, and integrate service into their students’ academic experience.
UMass CESL offers a yearlong CESL Faculty Fellows program for faculty who are developing new civic engagement or service-learning courses, as well as consultation to support the development of courses. We can also assist you in identifying and forming community partnerships and in developing student leaders as undergraduate teaching assistants or campus/community liaisons.
