CESL Program: Community Scholars Program

Major: Public Health

I learned about CESL through my friend, and I ultimately decided to join because I liked the idea of being involved in the community around here and being able to participate in some fulfilling work outside of just the classroom.

I love that we have a small class for CSP that we meet with every semester with the same people in it. It makes conversations feel a lot easier during discussions, and it’s also nice to be able to update everyone on projects that we’re working on with our community organizations and having everyone be so supportive of everything.

As a public health major, all of the values that we learn in the classes for CSP and also just the values of civic engagement and service-learning align really well with all my public health classes. The classes that we’ve taken in CSP surrounding policy and envisioning a better society has given me a lot of new perspectives on topics like indigenous sovereignty, women’s rights, and black radical tradition. I feel like I’ll be able to take these values and really apply them for whatever work I do in public health after graduation.
