Current Research
Hydrogel delivery of mesenchymal stem cells for bone regeneration. Collagen scaffold delivery of microRNA or bone regeneration. Bioinspired design for 3D printing. Developing new tissue engineering strategies for bone regeneration by utilizing innovative biomaterials to deliver stem cells and gene therapy to large bone defects. The Donahue lab studies the biology, physiology, and mechanics of bone from animals that have adapted to extreme environmental conditions. Examples include Trinidadian guppies, little pocket mice, arctic ground squirrels, bighorn sheep, hibernating bears, and dinosaurs. We also use more traditional laboratory rodent models to study treatments for osteoporosis and tissue engineering approaches to regenerating new bone tissue.
