Form: Department Permission for Student Away on Internship or Co-Op
Required for undergraduate students who will be away from UMass Amherst for a semester while on internship or co-op in order to maintain their status as a student.
Interstride is a third-party resource that UMass Amherst has contracted with to help international students find jobs, immigration support, and network. Students can discover international-friendly jobs in the US and beyond, develop networks with globally-minded friends, and view resources about immigration from a career perspective through webinars and courses.
Visit student.interstride.com on your computer, or download the Interstride app to access the platform on your phone.
Use your umass.edu email address to register or log-in. Note that register for an account requires an active umass.edu e-mail address. Alumni who wish to continue to use the system must provide a personal email address as well, then switch their primary email address in the system to the person email address.
Go to Resource Hub -> Webinars -> On-Demand Library to watch the latest student training. You'll learn how to navigate the platform, explore career options, and find internships and jobs that match your goals.
After that, you're all set! To get the most out of Interstride, make sure to browse through the help resources to see everything that this powerful tool can do to help you find the right opportunities. And as always, reach out to your career center for one-on-one career counseling.
The Iris Photo Booth is a feature of the Career Hub's office in Goodell that lets you have a professional picture taken by you! The booth is a fully automated system that provides you with ample lighting, a high quality camera, and even suggestions for how to pose. Once you take your pictures, you will receive a link in your e-mail that lets you edit them to suit your professional needs.
Looking to update your LinkedIn profile picture or bring some added professionalism to your e-mails? UMass Amherst now has an Iris Photo Booth, which lets you update your headshot with the same quality of a professional photographer, but on your schedule (and for free!).
Book your photo session is simple:
Log into Handshake and select Career Hub Photo Booth as your appointment type under your career center home page.
Pick a date and time that works with your schedule.
Fill out your information and then click submit.
Once you've booked your appointment, visit the Goodell Career Hub (located in Goodell 563) during your appointment time slot and you'll be good to go.
Bring your most professional self - that's it! A member of the career staff will help you get set up with booth and answer questions you have. Here are some quick tips to help you get a great headshot.
Be Punctual: Appointment blocks are for 15 minutes, which is more than enough time to use the Iris Photo Booth. However, you'll want to be on time to do any prep before your picture (check a mirror, change clothes, etc.)
Dress the Part: Your headshot is going to be your first impression in many digital settings. Solid colors will help you stand out - avoid busy patterns that distract in a negative way. Don't worry about going out and buying an expensive outfit - an ironed shirt, a well-fitting blazer (even if it is borrowed), or a simple dress can go a long way in looking professional.
Body Language Matters!: The photo booth will let you take three pictures, and give you advice in between each, so make sure you use those pictures well. A strong posture and a natural smile will help you exude confidence.
The booth is located in Goodell Hall/Goodell Building, Fifth Floor, Room 563. If you enter Goodell through the columned entrance, take a few steps forward and look to your left. Our suite will be through the double doors to the left before you enter the atrium.
More and more, your professional self will exist in physical and digital places. Your digital presence, whether it's your LinkedIn or Handshake profile, your profile picture on your e-mail address, or your professional social media accounts, should reflect the professionalism you bring along with your physical presence. And while including a picture is not common in most applications within the United States, a picture is common in some other countries' application materials.
Your picture will be a part of your first impression for future employers, networking opportunities, and colleagues. You will have a chance to show the friendly, engaging person that you know you are but can be hard to present in a resume or e-mail.
The photo booth booking process is typically appointment-based for individual students. To book as a student group or department, fill out the Career Hub Photo Booth Request Form and Career Services will follow up with you.
Reach out to Career Services at @email if you have any issues booking an appointment or have any other questions.
Required for undergraduate students who will be away from UMass Amherst for a semester while on internship or co-op in order to maintain their status as a student.
This form is to be used by all undergraduate students, both domestic and international undergraduate students, planning to participate in an Internship or Co-op outside the United States.
Only required for undergraduate students requesting permission to participate in an internship or co-op that have completed fewer than 45 credits or have a GPA under a 2.0.
Log to track hours worked each working during an internship or co-op. This is a requirement to be filled out during an internship or co-op experience.
The answer depends on your department.
First things first: any student can do an internship without earning academic credit for the experience, so long as they meet the legal requirements to work. For students wishing to earn academic credit for an internship, you need to see if your department allows it within your curriculum. Below is a list of all departments at UMass Amherst and their policies towards obtaining academic credit towards the completion of your degree.
Students: Please check with an academic advisor in your department to see if a credited internship will work for your specific academic requirements. Most departments require you to have completed at least 45 credits and have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA to do an internship for credit.
International Students: In order to engage in a paid internship (for F-1 and J-1 visa students) or an unpaid internship (for J-1 visa students), you must obtain internship credit during the semester(s) in which you are working. Check with the Office of Global Affairs (formerly the International Programs Office) to see what you need to do to get started.
