Cover Letter for an Elementary-Level Position

Dear Superintendent Chalmers,
I am applying for the elementary-level teaching position in your district. As a soon-to-be graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I have teaching experience in both third and fourth grades in an urban school setting as well as in community settings. I believe my passion for community engagement and urban education would make me a qualified candidate to consider.
I am currently student teaching third graders at the Derek Schoolander Charter Academy. My contributions have been to assist with reading and writing development, as well as individualize plans based upon learning differences and IEP’s. Your school emphasizes language skills that caters to both inner-city and suburban students, so I think this experience strengthens my background.
Your school also strives to engage students in the larger community. As a student teacher, I led a unit on plant life, and we volunteered at a local community garden. Once we produced vegetables, we partnered with a senior center to freely distribute the produce. In addition, I serve as a museum volunteer and have worked on environmental issues developmentally appropriate for all-aged kids. I love to integrate service learning into lesson plans and find students willful participants when you make learning fun.
My goal is to combine my experiences and enthusiasm to make a positive contribution to your school’s team. I would welcome an interview. Thank you.
