Chat GPT & AI in Career Development

ChatGPT & AI for Career Development: Tips for Career Success

Original resource drafted by Dan LaBonte. Modified by Joe Van Allen.

If used ethically and efficiently, ChatGPT and AI can be effective tools for career exploration, internship and job searching, and organizing thoughts for content creation. Below are just a few ways that AI tools can help you achieve career success.

  • Industry Analysis: AI can quickly gather useful industry data and career pathing information. While you may decide to deploy AI in your career development strategy, it is recommended that you consult with a member of UMass Career Services for more comprehensive support.

  • Application Materials: If used for application materials, generative AI responses should be utilized only for ideas and examples. Skills and experiences must be accurately represented in your resume and cover letter. Using authentic voice and tone is critical.

  • Practice: You can describe a role to the AI and provide specific direction (i.e., “You are an expert recruiter in the ‘X’ industry or at ‘X’ company”). Use follow up questions to create a dialogue beyond a singular prompt. You can also use “Regenerative Response” to request additional input.

Know the Limitations and Risks

It is important to note that, while AI is a useful tool, there are several risks to using it as a resource, including the following:

  • Companies have different perspectives on the use of AI in your application process. Some may utilize tools to determine if content was AI generated. If possible, determine a company’s position before incorporating AI into your strategy.

  • Information provided by AI tools is not guaranteed to be up-to-date or accurate.

  • The responses you receive may contain content that is copyrighted or otherwise legally protected. By reproducing content generated from these tools, you may put yourself at legal risk.

Prompts are Key

Detailed and precise prompts will generate better responses. For example, when asking for help related to a resume or job description, including these documents in your prompt will provide more information and context. Do not include any personal information in your prompts (name, e-mail, phone number, etc.)

Generative AI prompts guide AI output and determine the tone and quality of responses. Be specific and instructive when writing prompts.

Considerations when Designing a Prompt:

  • Describe your output goals

  • Define the audience and style

  • Request specific formatting

  • Include keywords and phrases to incorporate in responses

  • Provide examples or a content source for context

Sample Prompts

The samples provided below are prompts you can add into an AI engine to pull information. Remember:

  •  Customize your prompts and provide details to help improve the output

  • The responses are a starting point – do your own research after obtaining information from an AI engine

  • Even when the AI provides content, you should draft your own version based on your knowledge, experience, and voice.

Regarding the Use of Generative AI Tools

As of the Spring 2023 semester, the Faculty Senate at UMass Amherst made a determination that, absent any guidance from an instructor, students’ use of Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT is prohibited according to the Academic Honesty Policy.  UMass Career Services recognizes that the use of Generative AI tools may be beneficial for a variety of career and professional development uses. However, passing off information created using Generative AI technology as original work, even when modified, may pose ethical and legal risks. If you are in doubt as to whether usage of Generative AI may be appropriate, consult a career advisor.
