Tuition Refund after Withdrawal

Students who withdraw from the University may be subject to an adjustment of tuition and fees based on the last day they attend classes. Please refer to the Residential Life website for housing adjustment. If you plan to return to the University for a future semester, please review the information and instructions on the University Registar's website for Re-Enrollment Information.

Refunds for Prorated Tuition and Refunds for Excess Express

Prorated Tuition

Students who withdraw from the University may be subject to a pro-rated adjustment of tuition and fees. These adjustments are based on the last day a student attended any class. In other words, students will get a percentage of their tuition refunded based on the last day they attended any of their class.

Excess Express

When a student overpays, the University will issue a refund to the student's account electronically. Students can enroll in a program called Excess Express to receive this refund.

Undergraduate Prorated Tuition Refund Schedule

If you are planning to take the Fall semester off from UMass Amherst, please read the information about withdrawing on the UMass Dean of Students website. You must withdraw from the University by submitting a completed withdrawal form no later than September 3, 2024 (the first day of classes).

Students who withdraw from the University after the first day of classes are subject to a pro-rated adjustment of tuition and fees.  These adjustments are based on the last day a student attended any of their classes:

  1. Through registration day and first day of classes 1/30/2025: 100% refund
  2. First two weeks of the semester, 1/30/2025 through 2/12/2025: 80%
  3. During the third week, 2/12/2025 through 2/19/2025: 60%
  4. During the fourth week, 2/19/2025 through 2/26/2025: 40%
  5. During the fifth week, 2/26/2025 through 3/5/2025: 20%
  6. As of 3/6/2025, 0%. No refund

Meal Plan charges fall under the same pro-rated refund schedule as tuition and mandatory fees. Housing fees follow a separate pro-rated refund schedules.

Graduate

Graduate Prorated Tuition Refund Schedule

Graduate students voluntarily withdrawing from the University must send a letter to the Graduate Dean via their Graduate Program Director indicating the reasons for the request.  More information can be found on the Graduate School’s website.

The pro-rated adjustments for graduate students are listed below:
  1. Through 2/12/2025: 100% refund
  2. First two weeks of the semester, 2/16/2025 through 2/19/2025: 60%
  3. During the third week, 2/19/2025 through 2/26/2025: 40%
  4. During the fifth week, 2/26/2025 through 3/5/2025: 20%
  5. As of 3/6/2025, 0%. No refund.
