Research Interests

Plant Genetics

My research interests are centered on the biology of two different environments: the mangrove ecosystems of the Caribbean and the deep water environments of the Connecticut River. The mangrove research is focused on red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) and has included work on mutation rates, mating systems, characterization of economically interesting mutants, and identification of hybrids. The research site for my recent work is the Caroni Swamp in Trinidad. Both graduate and honors undergraduate students have participated in the field components of these studies.

The Connecticut River project was begun in the summer of 1996. We are initiating the first scientific underwater exploration of the deeper waters of this ecosystem. Judging from the number of new discoveries that have been made this past diving season, the research potential of this exploration is very great. Students who participate in this research must be SCUBA certified and have broad interest in botany, zoology and geology of this essentially unknown environment.
