Why the Bachelor’s Degree with Individual Concentration (BDIC) May Be Right for You

You design the path

You build your own concentration around your intellectual goals, just as you did at Hampshire College.

You gain access

To world-class libraries, global programs, and a diverse academic community.

You prepare for what’s next

Whether you're headed to graduate school, public service, creative fields, or other employment, BDIC helps you connect your ideas to real-world pathways.

You grow

Working closely with advisors who support your individualized goals.

You already believe learning should be self-directed, creative, and meaningful. So do we!

The process for enrolling in the BDIC program is a three-step process:

How to Apply

  • STEP ONE:
Apply to University of Massachusetts Amherst.
We recommend selecting a major that most closely aligns with your academic interests, this helps ensure a smooth transition and access to relevant coursework to your BDIC concentration.
  • STEP TWO:
Apply to BDIC after you have been admitted to UMass.
We want to understand your academic work to date and determine whether BDIC can support you in continuing to achieve your academic goals. This is a great opportunity to build on your previous work and connect it to courses you plan to take at UMass.
  • STEP THREE:
Once accepted, meet with a BDIC advisor, discuss fall courses that will support your concentration and enroll in the BDIC 396P Proposal Writing class.

In the meantime, if you would like to meet with a BDIC advisor, we are happy to talk through whether BDIC could be a good fit for you. However, we will not be able to assess your status in the major until your official transcript has been added to SPIRE and reviewed. This allows us to determine your university requirements and see which courses have transferred that may be relevant to your BDIC concentration.
