David Kantor

David Kantor, ’79, is the CEO of Radio Division & Reach Media for Urban One Media. Urban One is the largest distributor of urban content in the country. Last spring, BDIC organized a meeting for students focused on media, communications and the music industry. David was the alum guest, and shared interesting stories and valuable advice to the students. The event was well attended and provided a unique opportunity for students to talk to an alum with experience in their field.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM ATTENDING UMASS AMHERST?
Founding and running student group UPC productions. Also, my shift on WMUA Radio.

HOW DID BDIC PREPARE YOU FOR THE FUTURE?
Provided me with a deep education in three disciplines: communications, business, and the arts.

WHAT LIFE AND/OR CAREER ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO RECENT ALUMNI?
Find an area you love as your career. Don’t be risk adverse. And work harder than anyone else, it will be noticed by management.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR LEISURE TIME?
Hang out at the beach and collect classic radios. Operate my own low power radio station in Longboat Key, WULB, 96.3, The Beach.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST EPIPHANY, LIFE-DEFINING CHANGE THAT SHAPED YOUR LIFE?
Focus on the things that are controllable and don’t worry about the things that aren’t.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
Always have an alternative, backup plan even if you never need it.
