2025 Newsletter
Thank you, alumni, for making this possible with your generous donations to BDIC!
NOTE FROM THE ASSOCIATE PROVOST
When I arrived on campus in the spring of 2025, I was thrilled to work with the BDIC program. I came to UMass Amherst by way of West Virginia University, where I was the director of a multidisciplinary studies program that, just like BDIC, gave students the unique opportunity to design their own degrees. While I have been involved with interdisciplinary learning for a long time, the distinguished 55-year history of BDIC and the accomplishments of our alumni are truly inspiring.
That said, the BDIC approach to learning is all the more pertinent today. The answers to the world's great challenges don't reside in any single discipline; they are far too complex. Today's challenges require the resources of many different disciplines, drawing from different ways of knowing and areas of expertise. This reality is reinforced in BDIC every day. Our instructors and advisors inspire students to see the big picture, connect their learning, and develop their own innovative approaches to our world's most pressing issues, such as climate change, global inequality, and technological change, to name only a few.
It's a tremendous honor to be able to work with our faculty, staff, students, and alumni to advance the legacy of the BDIC program at UMass Amherst.
-Scott Davidson, Associate Provost for Interdisciplinary Programs
FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR
As we wrap up another busy year, I’m reminded of the generosity of our community’s support for the innovative work done by BDIC students. I welcome this opportunity to share a few student accomplishments from the past year, including an impressive Commonwealth Honors College thesis written by a BDIC senior, who compared early institutional responses to the AIDS pandemic in the United States and the United Kingdom. This timely interdisciplinary study demonstrates the popularity of health-related concentrations; yet our capacious program is also home to creatives whose degrees are rooted in the humanities. That is the case for the student project, “Boredom,” exhibited this spring in a UMass Studio Arts gallery. The solo exhibition visually demonstrated how boredom can catalyze creativity and suggests the power of art to provide new lenses through which to view the world. Our program’s commitment to experiential learning was also apparent in the number of students who took advantage of highly competitive internships this year, with the London Stock Exchange, Mayo Clinic, and other influential organizations. All of these student efforts reflect a long tradition of curiosity, imagination, and rigor that has distinguished BDIC on the UMass Amherst campus.
This year has also presented challenges, however. Like many of our peer institutions, we continue to navigate the demands of a rapidly changing higher education landscape. Our commitment to individualized interdisciplinary learning has not flagged, and we encourage alumni to join us by serving as student sponsors, volunteering to participate in our alumni speaker series, or contributing to the program during our annual fundraising campaigns. Please be in touch with me at @email if you have questions or suggestions for how you can contribute! If your organization ever needs an intern, you can also contact Joanna Miles at @email to connect with our students.

PORTRAIT OF A BDIC STUDENT/PEER ADVISOR
Zachary Robinson '26, Interior Design
What drew you to BDIC, and how did you decide on your concentration ?
I have always been very passionate about Interior Design, but I never really considered it as a possible career path. After spending one semester at UMass as an Elementary Education major, I knew that I wanted to study something else, something that aligned with my goals and interests. Thats when I learned about BDIC, and about the ability to piece together courses from three or more departments on campus, which was exactly what I wanted to do.
What do you love about being a Peer Advisor?
I love being able to help students and learning about everybody’s interests! Here at BDIC, no two people’s educational journey is the same. I love hearing about everyone’s niche interests and helping them figure out how to fit those interests into their curriculum!
What advice would you give to a student just starting out in BDIC?
My biggest pieces of advice would be to have patience, and to push the limits. This educational pathway is not easy, and it takes a lot of time to design your individualized concentration, especially when choosing classes. Don’t be afraid to reach out to professors to ask them to let you into their classes, because most of the time they will say yes! If you are self-motivated and continuously work to achieve your goals, then there is no doubt that you will succeed here in BDIC!
If BDIC gave out superlatives, what would yours be?
Most likely to have their own HGTV show!
What’s your most unusual or oddly specific course you've taken for your concentration?
Honestly, most of the courses that I have taken are expected for my major. I guess the one that stands out the most is Theater 365- Technical Direction. We helped design and then build sets for the theater production in spring 2024. I had a really great time and I honestly feel like I learned a lot about different materials and building techniques, as well as designing for different purposes. A class that I plan on taking before I graduate is retail floral design in Stockbridge. I think that it would be so fun, and I’ll be able to add Pro Florist to my resume!
What’s one UMass experience every student should have before graduating?
I feel like there are just too many to choose just one! A couple that come to mind are attending a UMass hockey game, getting stranded off campus because you took the wrong bus, and going to a BDIC Club meeting!!!
STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION
This year has been full of exciting developments and new student initiatives in the BDIC program. The Student Advisory Board put together two awesome alumni events, and students also launched two new groups—the Communications Team and the BDIC Club, started by a group of creative and motivated students.
Student Advisory Board
The Student Advisory Board was revitalized under the leadership of Ashlyn Venoo and Iva Morozova. The group organized two successful alumni speaker events: one in the fall with Zuzana Zilkova ’05 (Cognitive Science and Social Research), and another in the spring featuring Jillian Clark ’08 (Design for Theater and Dance).
Communications Team
The Communications Team originated from an independent student project by Heather Spangenberger in Fall 2024. She developed the framework for BDIC’s social media presence, which was implemented this spring with the help of Milo Manugian. We’re excited to continue expanding our reach and showcasing student work and events in the coming year.
Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky.
BDIC Club
The BDIC Club, founded by a group of design students, aims to foster a stronger sense of community within the program and celebrate the shared value of interdisciplinary learning. One of their first projects was curating a student art display now featured in the BDIC office reception area.
PROPOSAL WRITING CLASS
This year’s cohort was made up of five class sections with a total of 77 students.
As always, BDIC students’ interests are interdisciplinary and diverse as can be seen in these newly designed concentration titles:
- Public Development Design and Architectural Studies
- Sustainable Food and Farming
- Critical Theories and Critique
- Agricultural Operations
- Applications of Formal Logic in Personality Assessment
- Mycology with a focus on Bioremediation
- Real Estate and Design
- The Science of Human Experience
- Criminology and Criminal Justice Reform
At the end of each semester, students presented their proposals using images and a brief elevator pitch to explain their newly designed BDIC concentrations.
