BCT Students Revitalize Springfield

As part of a day of volunteering with Revitalize CDC in the Old Hill neighborhood of Springfield, MA, BCT students helped make homes more energy efficient.In the words of Zachary Kushner, co-president of the NAHB student group at UMass Amherst: “It's always nice to do community service projects ... but its also good for team bonding and we can all work together and accomplish the same goal. NAHB students participate in 2015 Residential Construction Management Competition

This January the UMass Student Chapter of the National Association of Home Builders once again competed in the NAHB's Residential Construction Management Competition. Last year was the team's first year competing and they took home "Rookie of the Year". This year, the team was led by returning members, President Frank Kelly, Vice President John Yip and Secretary Evan Miamis. Each student chapter was to act as a Construction Company with a fully developed proposal that they would present to a panel of investors. The site of the competition this year was a 40 acre site in Lebanon Tennessee that is part of a larger development called Hamilton Springs. Their company was once again Minuteman Construction and their development was named Cedar City Complex and consisted of mix residential and commercial unit that were geared towards generation Y. Their proposal was over 120 pages and they had to present their proposal to the panel of judges in Las Vegas during the International Builders Show. The...

A Message from the BCT Program Director As we conclude another successful semester in the BCT program, we are very proud to now have close to 200 undergraduate students and 10 graduate students including several PhDs. This year brought some changes to our program: With Dave Damery retiring (more on that below), I have taken over as program director. We also have a new faculty member, Dr. Ho-Sung Kim (see also below) and we will embark on a search for a replacement for Dave Damery soon. We are also very excited about a new building that will soon be our home - the “Integrated Design Building”. This state-of-the-art building will encompass many sustainable features (like an engineered wood structure) and will offer us better spaces for teaching, collaboration, labs, shops, and computer facilities. BCT NAHB Student Chapter Volunteers for Rebuilding Springfield

On Saturday April 26th the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Chapter in BCT volunteered for Rebuilding Springfield. The rainy weather did not stop the NAHB members and the many other volunteers from cleaning up yards, fixing homes, and helping out residents of the neighborhood. Students at this event were Neil Hourahan, John Coroa, John Yip, Chloe Rutkowski, Frankie Kelly and Tom Bliss. BCT Student Chapter Wins Award at International Builders’ Show

This past week, the UMass chapter of the National Association of Homebuilders travelled to Las Vegas to compete in the Residential Construction Management Competition, a star feature of the International Builders’ Show. This was UMass’ first time ever being represented at the RCMC after many past chapters had tried to complete the project, but failed due to lack of organization and funding. The Residential Construction Management Competition requires each student chapter to play the role of a construction company and develop a fully comprehensive development proposal for a real plot of land in the United States. This year the site was a 60-acre plot of land in Aurora, Colorado, just east of Denver. The UMass Chapter, also known as Minuteman Construction Co., proposed a 40-home neighborhood targeting the move up market (household income $80,000-$100,000) that focused on affordability, sustainability, and connectivity.
