Olver Design Building Room 170

Patricia Leavenworth, PE, Director for MassDOT’S Highway District 2, Connecticut River Valley, Western MA
Erosion often occurs on road embankments when there is a strong and constant impact of precipitation due to local weather phenomena. Heavy rain and flash floods caused a section of Route 2 in Gill to erode. This resulted in a landslide that led to the closedown of the route and caused massive traffic issues. This talk introduces students to the triad of erosion, transport, and deposition problems. The speaker will focus on the MassDOT emergency response procedures, as well as steps that were taken to assess the situation and a plan for rapid repairs.
