Getting Your Class Schedule Ready for Online Course Surveys
In the fall and spring semesters, the OWL SRTI coordinator tool opens sometime shortly after the Add/Drop date. To help SRTI and other online course surveys go as smoothly as possible for everyone involved, here are some things that department SRTI coordinators and schedule representatives can do to check that your class schedule is ready before the tool opens.
Does every instructor who needs an online course survey set up have a SPIRE designation of "Primary Instructor"?
- In order to be evaluated, a person must have a SPIRE designation of “Primary Instructor”.
- More than one person can be assigned a designation of “Primary Instructor” in SPIRE.
- If a course is team-taught, students will fill out a form for each instructor.
- In courses where one person supervises a group of graduate TAs who are doing the actual instruction, the TAs must be designated as a "Primary Instructor" in SPIRE in order to be evaluated.
- Some departments have non-credit Discussion and/or Laboratory section surveys. In order for a TA to be evaluated, that person must be listed as the primary instructor for the section.
- In the coordinator tool, you have the ability to exclude any primary instructor who does not need a course survey set up.
Does your schedule include non-standard date classes?
- All class surveys will open and close on the same date and time unless they have a non-standard class end date specified in SPIRE.
- The department schedule rep should submit the class start and end dates in the meeting times in CAPS for University non-standard date sections that need a course survey.
- UWW non-standard date classes should already be designated as such.
- Non-standard date classes will not appear in your "Class Selection" tab of the SRTI coordinator tool, but you can see a list of them by clicking on the "Non-Standard" tab.
- We'll contact you with information about when your non-standard surveys will open and close and will email instructors approximately one week before a survey begins.
- Note: if you have any extra surveys that need to be included with a non-standard date survey, let us know. We will need to attach them for you.
Are multiple instructors splitting the semester?
For multi-instructor classes where each instructor teaches during a different date range (thus splitting the semester), the individual instructor surveys can open and close on different dates if the information about when each teaches is recorded in SPIRE.
To submit the request in CAPS:
- On the Instructor tab in CAPS, verify that all instructors are listed for the class.
- On the Meeting tab in CAPS, enter 2 (or more if needed) of the same meeting pattern – one for each different set of dates. Note: CAPS does not allow the DSR to enter specific start and end dates.
- In the Meeting Comments field, provide the start and end date for each instructor.
- Submit to Registrar.
- CCM will accept the request and make the changes to the dates as provided on the Meeting tab. Note: Be aware that the meeting will appear multiple times in the class schedule.
Do First Year Seminars (FYS) and Integrative Experience (IE) classes have the correct course attribute?
- FYS and IE course sections are not evaluated with the regular SRTI, but with surveys that better assess the goals of these classes.
- In order for the correct survey to be selected, a FYS or IE course section must have the correct course attribute associated with it in SPIRE.
- Note: FYS sections will not appear in your "Class Selection" list in the OWL coordinator tool because these results go directly to the FYS program.
