Korean Language Program

In conjunction with the Five Colleges Consortium, East Asian Literatures & Cultures offers a complete four-year curriculum of Korean language courses at UMass.

Although all four fundamental language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are addressed in every course, lower-level courses have special emphasis on speaking and listening while content-based language classes are offered at the advanced level, including “Korean Language through Korean Literature” and “Current Issues in Korea.”

Our Korean program students have also participated in regional Five College as well as New England-area speech contests. UMass Beginning Korean 1 student Fei Meng won 3rd-place with a speech on "Making Kimchee" in fall, 2021!

We currently offer a Certificate in Korean, and are in the process of developing a major and a minor in Korean as well. In addition, opportunities to enjoy a variety of cultural experiences are provided through the program’s weekly tea meetings and through the annual cooking class, New Year celebration, and speech contest.

We also offer Summer Online Courses for Beginning Korean I
