Departmental Honors
Commonwealth Honors College offers highly motivated UMass Amherst students an opportunity to pursue broad inquiry and to engage in the creation of new knowledge by working closely with faculty. With a commitment to building a diverse and inclusive community, Commonwealth Honors College encourages students to become leaders in thought and action.
In cooperation with Commonwealth Honors College, the Asian Languages and Literatures Program make Departmental Honors tracks available to CHC students majoring in Chinese or Japanese. Students may complete DH as part of the full CHC curriculum, which includes Honors General Studies, or they may complete DH alone. The DH requirements remain within the major’s requirements except for that of producing an Honors Thesis or Project, for which faculty members provide devoted and in-depth help.
Using their superb language skills, Asian Languages and Literatures honors students have been producing creative theses and projects, ranging from translations of contemporary novels and production of original graphic novel to analysis of Chinese political economy and investigation into a new trend in Japanese business models. The program will continue to support talented and motivated students’ effort in becoming leaders in thought and action.
