The Amherst Historical Society seeks student interns with a strong interest in history, museums, material culture, community engagement, and social justice who desire practical experience in a public history and museum setting. Interns will be exposed to many aspects of historical society and local history museum management.
All interns will start by cataloging and learning the digital collection management platform Collective Access. This will familiarize you with the collection and its organization. After you are comfortable with that, you can move in one of three directions – Collections (cataloging, management, research); Exhibits (design, installation, outreach); or Administration (marketing, development, finance).
In addition to learning about the workings of a historical society and assisting staff mentors with current projects, interns may work on a special project related to their interests toward a possible physical or digital exhibit, tour script, or research guide.
An ideal candidate will have strong research, writing, presentation, organization, and interpersonal skills. Web content, social media, graphic and video software skills a plus! Interns will be expected to attend at least one board meeting and maintain prompt and professional communication with staff mentors at all times.
