The Springfield Symphony Orchestra performed its first concert in 1944, at its current home – Springfield Symphony Hall, which was originally built as the Municipal Auditorium. That performance received great reviews and was even recorded by the Office of War Information for rebroadcast to our troops overseas.
Today, the SSO is the largest Massachusetts symphony outside of Boston. It consists of over 80 musicians from the NE region of the United States and Canada, and holds many performances in a given season – as either the full orchestra or in ensemble formats.
The established mission of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra is:
To maintain and develop a professional symphony orchestra that produces musical performances of high artistic quality; To entertain and educate audiences of all ages; To expand and develop our audiences;
and to sponsor related programs and concerts that enhance the musical life of the region we serve.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
The Springfield Symphony Orchestra is seeking a creative and motivated individual looking to learn and practice marketing and communications skills to join a growing team. The Marketing Intern is responsible for supporting and assisting in the marketing and promotion strategies for the organization including content creation and writing and using promotional tools.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in content creation including, email, blog, social media, and video creation;
- Research promotional tools to reach audiences;
- Help to maintain a social media presence;
- Assist in the coordination of organization-wide development-related messaging and scheduling across platforms (e-newsletter, website, Facebook, etc.) in collaboration with Development;
- Attend SSO concerts and assist with marketing and development patron management and stewardship;
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively with different audiences across a variety of platforms, including social media;
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with others, and demonstrate professionalism;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs;
- Understanding of social media platforms – especially Facebook and Instagram;
- Strong organizational skills, high attention to detail and follow through;
- Familiarity with orchestral music is a plus;
- An ability to work some weekends and evenings.
College credit is available.
Schedule:
Our schedule is flexible and we are willing to make accommodations. If applicants are interested in interning during a different time frame, they are encouraged to inquire with our staff. Up to 10 hours per week during the school year and up to 20 hours during the summer. The SSO is flexible in scheduling to ensure that internship requirements are met, but prefer some work should time be within regular business hours of 9 AM to 5 PM. Time would be required on concert weekends and for special events in the evenings and on weekends.
