Through science and art, Paperbark Literary Magazine explores
ecologies in crisis and ways to address the climate catastrophe
Amherst, MA–The editors of Paperbark are pleased to announce the publication of issue 04 featuring poetry, prose, visual art, and interviews by internationally renowned and emerging artists. Paperbark lives at the confluence of text and image, science and art. We believe in an obligation to a livable future nurtured through sustainability and collaborations between generations, populations, and fields of thought. Rooted in stewardship and committed to art’s transformative capacities, Paperbark gathers portrayals of ecologies in crisis—as well as evidence of life’s flourishing intricacies.
Issue 04 includes an interview with Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy discussing the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Net Zero Project, the price of burning fossil fuels, climate devastation, and what we owe the next generation. The issue also features interviews with Dr. Sama Ahm, CAConrad, Cima Khademi, Dr. Z Yan Wang, Shin Yu Pai.
Painter and interdisciplinary artist, Ashely Eliza Williams created the cover art and makes work about interspecies communication, non-human language, as well as empathetic ways to engage with nature and each other. Issue 04 features artists and writers including Abigail Chabitnoy, Robin Gow, Martín Espada, Lauren Camp, Krista Leigh Steinke, and others.
Paperbark is itself a collective effort. Begun in 2016 in the School of Earth & Sustainability, the magazine is a collaboration among students, faculty, and staff at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Issue 04 is largely heralded by the MFA for Poets and Writers, and fortified by the tremendous efforts of students, staff, and faculty in the Studio Arts program, Department of English, School of Earth & Sustainability, Fine Arts Center, and UMass Libraries. Paperbark is purposive and eclectic. It educates and delights.
