Alter/Altar
Department of Art MFA Candidates
HERTER ART GALLERY is pleased to present ALTER/ALTAR, an exhibition of work by graduate students in the Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Making art implies alteration, literally and figuratively, while an altar suggests a place for offering. By altering in the pursuit of offering, these artists work towards various forms of "altars". Through this thematic play on words, this exhibition explores the parallels that exist between their diverse practices, which range from painting, video, sculpture, installation, to performance.
Please join us at the opening reception to celebrate these artists and their journeys!
Opening Reception: Wednesday, November 7, 5 - 7 pm
November 7 - 28, Herter Art Gallery, UMass

Candy Average
Tristatic presents CANDY AVERAGE, a collective identity crisis, documented through video and objects. Using improvisation and intuition as their guides, three figures navigate constructed worlds that softly blend reality and fiction. Vignettes in which wigs are portals, fresh lilies are lunch, and friendship is choreographed through wood piles, living rooms and discount stores.
Tristatic is Jacqueline Dougherty, Julia Handschuh, and Haley Morgan. This trio makes performance for video, generating work through the embodied exploration of space and identity, and using a camera to document, amplify, and share their playtime. Based in Atlanta, GA and Western Massachusetts.
October 30 - November 16
Closing reception on Thursday, November 15, 5 - 7 pm
Student Union Art Gallery, UMass
Gallery Hours: Monday - Thursday, 10 am to 5 pm, Friday, 10 am to 3 pm

[Containing] Great Space
Curated by Department of Art Professor Emeritus Jeanette Cole, and featuring artists Paula Elliott, Sigrid Miller Pollin, and Joan Weber, this exhibition originated with the notion of a container like image as a vehicle to enter a place of interiority, and the possibilities of distinctly personal results when artists embark on this path.
