Pockets of Light

Three MFA candidates are illuminating areas of their summer research. The three investigations overlap in their various interpretations of transparency, the interplay of visible with invisible, bridging of spaces (public or private, collective memory, etc), and personal narrative. Light is our medium and our metaphor. Our collective voices are seeking our personal truths.

The Herter Art Gallery is pleased to present The Colored Bone China, an exhibition of new work by faculty member, Juana Valdes. A professor in the Department of Art, Valdes uses printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and site-specific installations, to explore issues of race, transnationalism, gender, labor, and class.

Dialéctica Oaxaqueña
Mexican printmaking gallery Estampa Galería is comprised of seven highly skilled artists dedicated to the promotion of contemporary graphic art of their capital city Oaxaca. On view are works on paper that display honor for animals, people and plants as well as symbolic tributes to spirituality.

The UMass Amherst Arts Extension Service, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, and BDIC are pleased to present the Arts Entrepreneurship Initiative's Fall Arts and Humanities Internship Fair! The fair will feature local internship opportunities in the arts, arts management, and cultural non-profit fields. Refreshments will be provided. A list of participating internship providers will be available Monday, October 8.

Northampton Arts Council Funding Proposals
Proposals are now being accepted for community-oriented arts, humanities, and science programs. These grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Northampton, Florence, and Leeds - including e exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies, scholarships, or performances in schools, workshops, and lectures. This year, the Northampton Arts Council will distribute up to $13,700 in grants.
Proposal Deadline: Monday, October 15th

2018 CAA Professional Development Fellowships
now open for MFA students
Now accepting applications! CAA's Professional Development Fellowships program supports artists, designers, craftspersons, historians, curators, and critics who are enrolled in MFA or PhD programs and graduating in 2019. Fellows are honored with $10,000 unrestricted grants to help them with various aspects of their work.
Application deadline: November 16, 2018
