Graduate School MFA Fellowships
The Department of Art is grateful to the Graduate School for providing valuable research funding for our Graduate students. This year, faculty selected three students as recipients for these research funds: Vick Quezada (third year MFA), Maggie Wilson (second year MFA) and Kathy Fanelli (First year MFA). Congratulations to all of you!
UMCA Assistantship: Bibiana Medkova
This summer Bibiana is working as a Graduate Assistant at the University Museum of Contemporary Art (UMCA), UMass AMherst, with Loretta Yarlow (Director) and Amanda Herman (Education Curator), on public programming for a series of exhibitions in the 2018-19 year related to Art and Math.The museum is organizing a symposium tentatively titled Art + Math =, to be held at UMass in early April 2019.
Additionally, Bibiana is working on a compilation of math rock, serialism and music with unusual time signatures that will play in one of the UMCA’s galleries. For the audio tour guide in conjunction with XTCA: Cross Town Contemporary Art exhibition, Bibiana edited and mastered the interviews and built the infrastructure of the tour guide on CultureSpots.

Sean Greene
Installations on view at UMCA satelitte space

The UMCA is currently housing new installations at its two "satellite spaces," located at the UMass/Five College Federal Credit Union's Hadley and Campus Center branches.
Now on view at the Hadley branch are paintings on paper by UMass Department of Art MFA alumnus Sean Greene, whose art focuses on an interest in color interactions, and the sensations that result from visually absorbing them. Coming this Summer: Cross Town Contemporary Art (XTCA)

The UMCA, along with the Department of Architecture, have partnered with the Town of Amherst to build an art and culture bridge– a series of public sculptures– to activate the North Pleasant Street corridor and connect downtown to campus. The exhibition features work by twelve national and local artists and members of the academic community. The goal of this project is to generate a robust public dialogue about the value of art and culture in future community development.
Artists include: Sarah Braman; Roberley Bell; CLOK (Collective– LOK: William O'Brien Jr., and Michael Kubo); Naomi Darling; Tom Friedman; Josephine Halvorson; Harold Grinspoon; Benjamin Jones; Pamela Matsuda-Dunn; Gary Orlinsky; Rob Swainston; and Erika Zekos

Shane Mecklenburger: Double Zero: Goggles of True Seeing

UMass Department of Art professor Shane Mecklenburger's virtual reality work will be on display at in Arles, France as a part of the Digital Museum of Digital Art's 3.0 exhibit.

Shona Macdonald: Ballinglen Arts Foundation Residency

Shona Macdonald just completed a month-long residency in July at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, Co. Mayo, Ireland. While resident, Shona completed a new series of works that will be exhibited this fall in Increments, at the Ukranian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago, IL.

Monona Rossol
Health and Safety in the Art Studio

From August 20 through August 24, the Department of Art at UMass Amherst will host a special, intensive summer course taught by industrial hygienist, Monona Rossol, through the Office of Continuing and Professional Education. Rossol will visit UMass Amherst to teach an exclusive course: Health and Safety in the Art Studio (#61235/LLART 101). For more information, click here.
