Meraki Studio Spring 2023 Film Festival

The deadline for submissions is April 28 at 11:59 PM. 

Submissions are now open for the 1st Annual UMass Animated Film Festival, organized by Meraki Studio, UMass' animation club! 

Films must be animated or mostly animated and created while enrolled as an undergraduate at one of the Five Colleges.

Films can be submitted here.

This exhibition is a poignant and intimate exploration of the objects and memories accompanying them on their journeys through life.

Featuring the works of four talented artists, Nina Nabizadeh, Cima Khademi, Yasamin Zamanieh, and Leila Rahnama, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the experiences of these Iranian artists and the emotions that are embedded in the objects and memories that shape their identities.

This exhibition invites visitors to explore the themes of identity, social justice, and the human experience.

Let’s Talk About Critique

Reimagining Art and Design Education

The University of Chicago Press has just published a new book titled Let’s Talk about Critique, and the Art Department professor Susan Jahoda has contributed three protocols to the text.

The book examines how critique in art education has evolved, how it falls short, and what else it could be. Elissa Armstrong and Mariah Doren contextualize current practices by discussing the history of critique, the field of education, and the characteristics of today’s students. Then they offer suggestions for ways to have more open, inclusive, and dynamic classroom conversations about art and design. The core of the book consists of critique format descriptions, written by experienced educators, that provide a wide variety of thoughtful approaches that can be readily adapted and used.

AN ELEGY IN A DREAM

April 20 - May 4

Nima Nikakhlagh's experimental film has been selected for the Canada-based
Pebbles Underground Film and Video Art Festival.

As a non-narrative audio-visual experience, the film itself is not fully realized until it is individually and subjectively interpreted by each viewer.

In this project, Nima collaborated with two other Iranian artists in Iran.

Art as Activism: Protecting Atlanta's Forests

Monet, a platform empowering creativity, has teamed up with Emmy Currier-Dougherty, a student artist-activist, with the support of the UMass Art Department and Herter Art Gallery.

Emmy's call is to support Stop Cop City, the American social movement, by selling her artwork [featured in the Art 401: Perfossinal Practices group exhibition] and using the money to fund a lawsuit against deforestation in Atlanta. 

Please join us to raise as much awareness and money, to defend Atlanta Forest.

Spring Open Studios

at One Cottage Street 

in Easthampton 

May 6 & 7, 10 am-5 pm

UMass Amherst Ceramics Technical Assistant, Evelyn Snyder, will be part of the annual Spring Open Studios at One Cottage Street in Easthampton. You can visit her studio, Kaleidoscope Pottery, along with 25 other building residents and guests.

Many studios also offer discounts; all have unique work with local flavor. Meet people who create work in the studios where it happens.

Event is free and open to the public.

Excellence in Art Scholarship Fund

UMassGives is a two-day online giving campaign, Wednesday, 4/26, and Thursday, 4/27, using email, texts, and social media to encourage people to give to their favorite area of UMass Amherst.
