The Aftereffects of War in Contemporary Korean Art

Join us for a Lecture on Contemporary Korean art by Young Min Moon
Professor and Chair of the Department of Art.

The Lecture will take place at the Great Hall, Old Chapel

on April 12 at 4 pm.

Over the past century, the Korean peninsula has seen a succession of violent ruptures, and it remains a flashpoint for the world’s superpowers. The peninsula is still gripped by Cold War geopolitics more than three decades after the fall of the Communist bloc. In the aftermath of the Korean War, South Korea was built on androcentric nation building, anti-communism, and a relentless drive for industrialization. In the period of compressed development from the poverty-stricken 1950s to the global success stories of today, countless lives have been lost to the state apparatus – lives whose memories must be contextualized in the history and politics of the Cold War.

This lecture will provide American audiences with a deeper understanding of South Korea by examining how contemporary Korean artists investigate this difficult historical legacy: through their grappling with political violence, forsaken memories, and the unfinished task of mourning in the context of a militarized modernity.

For us, the process of life plays out in the environment, disability, romantic relationships, illness, fashion, hope, and coexistence.

Herter Art Gallery is delighted to present We Are All Made of the Same Stuff, a group
exhibition of work by the Art 401: Professional Practices students at UMass Amherst.

Artists included: Shriya Agrawal, Diya Antony, Emily Beaulieu,
Emmy Currier-Dougherty, Meagan Gravel, Greta Jarvi, Shannon Jenkins,
Elijah Nosa, and Angelina Oliveira

 Fly in Power (Solidarity in Asian Migrant Massage and Sex Workers)

4:30 pm - 6:30 pm Thursday, April 27

W 245, South College, UMass-Amherst  

Co-directed by Yoon Grace Ra and Yin Q, Fly in Power follows Charlotte, a Korean massage worker and core organizer of Red Canary Song (RCS): a social justice collective of Asian diasporic massage workers, sex workers, and allies who base build through mutual aid. Through her story, we learn how the incarceration system is pitted against Asian migrant women and their survival. Other RCS members, including Khokhoi, a young bodyworker, Esther K, a sex work activist, and Prof Elena Shih, Brown University, share powerful insights that debunk the myths of sex trafficking. Fly in Power is a glimpse into the intimate spaces that not only connect these workers but are also a testament to the global advocacy of women's rights to work and thrive.

This film has been produced entirely by women, non-binary, trans, and queers of the Asian diaspora. More than half of the production team are former sex workers.

The Wall is in the Atrium, 2nd floor, Studio Arts Building

Okwuosa's painting is dedicated to Black women and streetwear. The mural is inspired by her past creations and personal love of fashion. Okwuosa finds it important for Black subjects in the art to be showcased around campus. 

UMass Community Shines at "Empty Bowls" Fundraising Event!

We are thrilled to share that the April 1, 2023 Empty Bowls event at Amhesr survival center was a resounding success, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to UMass Art Department for their incredible contribution. Local potters from the UMass Art Department generously donated 30 beautiful handmade bowls to the event, which were available for purchase, with all proceeds going towards supporting Amhesr survival center food and nutrition programs that serve almost 7,500 food-insecure residents in Hampshire and Franklin Counties.
