UMass Gives Spring 2023 – Art Department

Dear Friends of the Department of Art at UMass Amherst,

We hope that you and your loved ones are doing well. I am excited to share some of our accomplishments with you.

The complete revamping of the Arts Bridge in the Bromery Center for the Arts (formerly Fine Art Center) includes a new Animation Studio. And we are thrilled to welcome Hallie Bahn as our Animation Professor.

We have also made significant progress in the Design area. A recent Design Faculty hire Jeff Kasper has focused on creating the new "Digital and Creative Technologies Certificate Program." We built a new dedicated computer lab for this curriculum to further prioritize the Design. We are also currently conducting a national search for a new tenure-track professor in Interactive Design who will join us in September.

In addition, Sohee Koo joined the department as Professor and the Art Education Program Coordinator. The Art Education program now offers greater flexibility by including an Initial Teaching License Track MA in Art Ed and the existing Open Track MA in Art Ed.

Prioritizing student success and well-being has also been a theme this year. Cathryn Brubaker is our dedicated academic advisor who supports our Art Major and Art Minor students.

Our Western Mass community is essential to us as well. For example, we partner with Greenfield Community College to exchange faculty art exhibitions. In a community effort, we are collaborating with the 4H Youth Group and Baystate Hospital to produce an animation that promotes mental health for at-risk youths in the region. This benefits the community and allows our Art students real-world experience.

We want to build on this momentum and will participate in the UMassGives campaign this week, April 26-27.  This is a 2-day online crowdfunding and giving campaign to promote and celebrate the incredible impact that private philanthropy can have to support our department.

The Department of Art is reaching out to current UMass faculty, staff, students, our alums, and friends to please consider contributing to support our students.

Here is how you can help and participate:

  1. Support the Department of Art by visiting our UMass Gives page

  2. Please spread the word and reach out to your contacts, colleagues, friends, relatives, etc. and ask them to help support the Art department with a gift.

Your donations support our mission. We will apply the funds raised to honor and award Excellence in Art Scholarships to hard-working undergraduate students during the commencement week celebration in May. We also wish to set aside scholarship funds to recruit students from underrepresented groups.

I hope you will be part of this effort to honor our aspiring young students in the Department of Art at UMass Amherst.

Thank you.
