Registration for BA/BFA Studio Art and BFA Art Education begins November 2 and you will be assigned dates on Spire were you can enroll in classes for Spring 2021.

You will be hearing from your faculty advisors in the coming days if you have not heard already. It is incredibly important that you meet with a faculty member on your advising team. MFA Thesis Show: The Passing Show

The Passing Show, examines the interface between contemplative practices and the destabilizing effect of the carnivalesque. A repurposed early 20th century merry-go-round is reconfigured as a conceptual vehicle for renewing our attention to removing hindrances. The site-specific installation, titled Vimoksha, is viewed through the lens of the radical imaginary, investigating notions of karmic inheritance through a heuristic approach to material processes, personal history, kinetics and sound.
A socially distanced closing reception will be held
October 30, 2020, 5 - 7 pm.

Vimoksha is illuminated from dusk till dawn daily and is also visible outdoors at the fork between N. Pleasant St. and Thatcher Rd. Amherst.

We Are For Freedoms
Virtual Town Hall, Fall 2020
Tuesday, October 27, 6:00 p.m.
Designed by the For Freedoms Student Organizing Committee and hosted before the upcoming presidential election, this virtual gathering will bring together students, artists, and creative thinkers to discuss ideas around democracy, civic engagement, activism, and protest. It will include an introduction to the UMCA’s spring 2021 exhibition of the same name. Open to all.

Jules Jones: Piece Me Back Together
UMass Department of Art BFA Alum and local artist Jules Jones closely inspects the concept of Wellness saying, “We hold magic in our arms when we hug our friends and lovers, in our words when we discuss the Revolution.” In paintings that reference global art traditions and cultural iconography the disabled artist molds mini worlds with haloed beings, voluptuous fertility goddesses, and forms that challenge the gender binary. Using monotype, lithography, woodcut, linoleum and rubber cuts, and screen prints with pieces of paintings on paper, Jones layers line, color, and shape through watercolor, ink, and pastel, presenting us with vibrant collage and print paintings that explode with energy.
This exhibit is part of the gallery’s 2020-21 theme entitled Healing Bodies. Because many of our bodies whether planetary, ideological, physical, cultural or otherwise, require attention, we have invited visual and performance works that offer new ways of viewing Wellness as defined by our artists.

UMass Department of Art BFA Alumna Amanda Baldi takes part in the largest and most varied exhibition ArtsWorcester produces each year. The "One" represents the work that each artist most wishes to show, regardless of medium or theme, and features 161 ArtsWorcester artist members
This year's "One" is on view in the East and West Galleries through
Sunday, November 8, 2020.
Gallery hours run Thursdays through Sundays,
12:00 to 5:00 PM, and are free to all.

While You Were Away
Procheta Mukherjee Olson
This installation is a collaborative project between Indian artist and UMass MFA Alumna Procheta Mukherjee Olson living in the U.S. and her American friend living in India. They recorded initial experiences of the place that each had just moved to. These impressions are inscribed on objects that are peculiar to this new place, something unseen in their country of origin. They deconstructed and examined the process of assimilation. They aim to create a consciousness of similarity and difference while also showing how personal narratives act as gateways into the larger collective.

"Myths have the power to both reflect and effect the psychology of their contributing cultures. Through a developed creative language, mythology allows the human psyche to create the world anew, showcasing the human propensity towards imagination. It is through this creative process that a single species utilizes its imagination to attempt to understand its environment, regardless of cultural or external contexts.

UMCA Student Educator Practicum
Spring 2021, Tuesdays 1:00 - 2:15 p.m. (2 credits)
This practicum will train you to be a museum gallery educator and guide. You will develop a number of valuable skills you can use in museums and in a wide variety of academic and professional settings. The course will begin with research into the artist/s and art that you will be introducing to our visitors. You’ll develop skills in public speaking, learn about the various roles of a working museum, and design your own tour for range of age groups (UMass students, K-12 visitors, and the general public).
Along with designing your own tour, you’ll meet and learn about all aspects of the museum and learn from advanced UMCA Student Educators. This course will give you valuable knowledge that you can translate into employment skills or in preparation for graduate school. It will give you the tools to talk about art based on the VTS [Visual Thinking Strategies] system currently used in American art museums, to learn museum etiquette, and to feel comfortable working in a museum.
The course will include research, discussions, guest lectures, and (virtual) field trips to area museums.

A benefit for the Trans Asylum Support Seeker Network
Student Union Web Gallery
Take part in the formation of a new type of gallery setting for University of Massachusetts Amherst’s oldest student run art gallery, now the Student Union Web Gallery! We are calling upon artists who have created artwork that revolves around themes of social justice, mutual aid, confronting white supremacy, supporting community development, neighborly love and imaginaries of the future we are going to co-create. Inspirational posters, inspiring images, fliers, infographics, photos, comics... all accepted.
Submit your work graphically (in PDF format and keeping in mind it will most likely be printed on 8.5 by 11 paper) to suagdirector@sacl.umass.edu, by the date: October 28. You can submit as many pieces as you’d like! It will be approved by SUWG staff and then uploaded to the newly designed Student Union Web Gallery. The first round of artwork will be dropped on the web gallery on November 1!
All artwork will be downloadable with a suggested donation to the Trans Asylum Support Seeker Network. TASSN is a border abolitionist direct action and mutual aid collective focused on supporting transgender asylum seekers in crossing the border, getting out of detention, securing housing, legal support, healthcare, transportation, and comprehensive daily financial and material support, building thriving lives and communities, and winning their asylum cases.

Walter Feldman Fellowship for Emerging Artists
This fellowship opportunity is offered by the
Arts and Business Council of Greater Boston.
The Walter Feldman Fellowship for Emerging Artists, now in its 7th year, supports visual artists through a solo exhibition or alternative presentation of their work, along with curatorial and professional development support, including guidance on improving business skills for effective presentations and promotion of their work.
The Fellowship is open to artists residing in the New England area working in 2D media other than photography and film, who have yet to have their first solo exhibition.

With a publication each spring, Jabberwocky showcases the creativity and talent of writers, poets, and artists UMass Amherst has to offer! We are looking for dedicated students who are passionate about literature and arts as well as open minded to dive deeper into important issues society is currently facing. Positions available are for Poetry, Fiction, Criticism/Nonfiction, and Media Editors as well as Executive Staff (Managing Editor and Associate Editor). Prior experience in editing and publishing is greatly appreciated but not necessary. Undergraduate students of all years are welcome to apply!
