Art Department Honors Program

The Fine Art, Art Education and Art History programs participate in the Honors College Programs and foster excellence through outstanding arts-based research. 

Program Requirements: Studio Art

To enter the Departmental Honors Program in Studio Art, you must be a member in good standing of Commonwealth Honors College with the ability to complete 48 graded (not pass/fail) credits in residence (registered at UMass Amherst, not transferred).

You must meet with the Undergraduate Program Director to discuss requirements and departmental opportunities. The Director will sign a Change of Major form initiating a change to Departmental Honors in Studio Art to indicate to Commonwealth College and the Registrar’s Office an intention to admit you to the Departmental Honors track. The Change of Major form must be co-signed at the Commonwealth College Office to finalize admission to the track.

In addition to completing Commonwealth College Honors course requirements as specified in the student’s Commonwealth College contract, the following requirements must be completed within the Department unless there are contracted accommodations:

  • 1 ART or ARCH-DES honors course any level
  • 1 ART or ARCH-DES honors course 300-level or higher
  • Honors Thesis or Project. Options include:
    • Individually contracted: ART 499Y Honors Research and ART 499T Honors Thesis
  • When offered, 1 credit ART or ARCH DES 291H, 391H and 491H seminars plus their pre-requisite non-honors root course are acceptable as DH electives.
