As We Move Forward: Black Women Artists in Miami

In Collaboration with Augusta Savage Gallery and the Art Department as part of the exhibition “As We Move Forward” Supported by the Lois E. Toko Lecture Series Endowment and in collaboration with the Augusta Savage Gallery and the Art Department, we are pleased to present a lecture by Professor Donette Francis as part of the “As We Move Forward” exhibition. Professor Francis, the Director of the Center for Global Black Studies at the University of Miami, will respond to the exhibition through her lecture, highlighting the pivotal roles and contributions of Black women artists in Florida. This event is a concerted effort to spotlight narratives that engage with issues of race, place, and cultural politics within the African Diaspora. Dr. Francis’s talk, titled “As We Move Forward: Black Women Artists in Miami,” not only honors the legacy of Augusta Savage but also showcases the historical and contemporary significance of Black art in the region. Join us for an enlightening discussion that bridges art, scholarship, and community dialogue. Dr. Donette Francis is director of the Center for Global Black Studies and an Associate Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Miami. Her research and writing investigate place, aesthetics, and cultural politics in the African Diaspora. Professor Francis is the author of Fictions of Feminine Citizenship: Sexuality and the Nation in Contemporary Caribbean Literature. She is currently completing Creole Miami: Black Arts at the Hemispheric Crossroads, a sociocultural history of Black arts practice in Miami from 1970s to present.
