Portfolio Review
Prospective students are welcome to bring a physical or digital portfolio (via laptop or tablet) to be reviewed by studio arts faculty. Faculty do not give admissions decisions at this event but will review creative work and give advice and feedback on applying to the undergraduate art programs.
Tips for preparing a portfolio:
- There are no requirements for media or content when submitting a portfolio to UMass Amherst. Applicants should apply with what they consider their best work in any medium and check portfolio submission tips here.
- Portfolios should be around 12-15 pieces max.
- Artwork should not include reproductions of other artists' work (copies of animated characters or famous portraits).
- Process-based work such as sketchbook pages and studies are encouraged to showcase project or skills development but should not constitute more than 1/3 of the portfolio.
- Our program looks for portfolios that achieve either breadth (broad exploration of skills in different media or content) or depth (deep dive into a cohesive medium or topic).
