Colors of Unity: Collaborative Art Project
Project Description:
Bo Kim, MFA Graduate Student, UMass Amherst
Project Overview: The "Colors of Unity" project is a collaborative art initiative that invites the UMass Amherst community to engage in meaningful dialogue and collective creativity to address and combat discrimination. This event is inspired by the "Stop Asian Hate" and "Black Lives Matter" social movements and seeks to reflect their significance through art, community connection, and diverse perspectives. Drawing from the innovative fabric art techniques of Sam Gilliam and Pacita Abad, the project will explore themes of resilience, solidarity, and diversity in a welcoming and creative environment.
Artistic Inspiration and Process: At the heart of "Colors of Unity" is a dynamic process combining guided discussions, presentations, and hands-on collaborative art creation. Participants, guided by a dedicated student art group, will collaborate to dye and shape fabrics into a large, colorful fabric sculpture—a shared work symbolizing community, diversity, and hope.
Event Highlights:
- Guided Art-Making Process: To foster accessibility, the art creation process will involve step-by-step guidance, allowing all participants—regardless of artistic background—to contribute meaningfully.
- Empowering Group Discussions: Through discussions, participants will explore the personal and collective meanings behind the artwork, reflecting on how social movements like “Stop Asian Hate” and “Black Lives Matter” impact our communities.
- Celebration of Unity and Diversity: The finished sculpture, created by UMass students, faculty, and staff, will embody a unified expression of solidarity and creative empowerment, capturing the power of art to build understanding and inspire change.
Join Us! Open to the Public: This event warmly welcomes the UMass community and beyond. "Colors of Unity" offers a supportive space to connect, reflect, and create as a collective expression of solidarity and positive action. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the role of art in fostering awareness and unity.
