Gaining or Ceding Control: The Sudoku Diaries
COPPER FRANCES GILOTH
Public Reception: Sept 17 4:00pm – 6:00pm
Offering a glimpse into a fascinating and rich journey that Giloth embarked upon, Gaining or Ceding Control: The Sudoku Diaries is full of the unexpected. Gridded sheets of beautifully painted and sewn solution-driven Sudoku puzzles line the gallery walls. Looking closer, we are drawn into what feels like pages of a personal diary. There are hints and clues of two years of weekly global events, personal encounters, travel, newfound discoveries, and loss.
Consider the number puzzles as “road maps” that meander. Doubling as poetically painted canvases, their colors are significant of life transitions. After a half year of mourning the loss of her 18-year-old nephew documented in white Sudoku puzzles, she ran out of paper. Enticed by a wall of colored paper at an art/stationery store in France, she had “the idea of something other than white.” Blue and yellow represent the colors of road markers on a five-week walking pilgrimage in Spain. What she gains through the meditative act of daily problem solving puzzles she cedes into a spiritual self-reckoning.
