Art Department Scholarship Opportunities

College can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be! In addition to university-wide scholarship opportunities, the Fine Art Department has scholarships exclusively available to our program. All students should apply to the general Academic Works application as well as individual scholarships.

Alexis Kuhr Memorial Scholarship

The purpose of the fund is to support MFA students in Art in their second or third year of the program with financial need as determined by the University. Recipients should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate excellence in their art practice. Preference will be given to graduate students who are the first in their family to attend college. Varies

Art History Summer Enrichment Grant

This Summer Enrichment Grant to help support an internship in the field of Art History. Varies

CHC Finish Strong Honors Thesis Award - College of Humanities and Fine Arts

The “CHC Finish Strong Thesis Award” program offers a spring stipend of $2,500 to ten students (one from each UMass school or college) enrolled in their thesis to focus on finishing. Financial need is a component of the selection process. Awardees will be expected to sign a participant agreement that covers expectations, including individual and cohort meetings and a brief reflection after graduation.

Complete the university’s general scholarship application and search for “CHC Finish Strong Thesis Award.” $2,500

College of Humanities and Fine Arts Tuition Assistance Fund

Scholarship available to College of Humanities and Fine Arts major with a preference for qualified, female students with financial need from small towns in western Massachusetts. $3,000

Department Chair’s Award for BFA Project

Department Chair’s Award for BFA Project is awarded by the Art Department Chair to undergraduate art majors who demonstrate dedication and passion for the studio arts.
*Please note this scholarship requires students to have successfully completed ART402: BFA Degree Project and the submission of a portfolio. Varies

Excellence in Art

Excellence in Art Scholarships are awarded by the Art Department to undergraduate art majors who demonstrate dedication and passion for the studio arts.

Frank Prentice Rand Fund

Established to support students majoring in Theater or Art with academic merit and demonstrated financial need. Varies

George M. Wardlaw Art Department Scholarship

The George M. Wardlaw Art Department Scholarship was established to provide a scholarship to one or more undergraduate or graduate art majors on the basis of demonstrated excellence in the visual arts.

Henry and Jean Hall Humanities and Fine Arts Scholarship Fund

A scholarship that supports students majoring in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts who have financial need and who are in good academic standing. Varies

Lisa Hayward Basile Scholarship (Fall)

The purpose of the Fund will be to support students in the Art Education Program with financial need as determined by UMass Amherst. Available to Undergraduate and Graduate Students. Varies

Michael S. Roif Award in Film Studies

Established in memory of Michael S. Roif ’83 MBA to provide financial assistance to one or more students enrolled in the certificate program in the Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies who has demonstrated excellence and creativity in their work. By faculty nomination only.
Nominees must be undergraduate Film Studies Certificate students or students in the Film Studies concentration who have completed a film, video, moving image, media or a written project in a UMass film studies course within the past three semesters. $937.50

Richard Humphreys Award for Excellence in Painting

Established to provide support for the undergraduate painting program in the Department of Art.
