Ceramics at UMass Amherst offers a curriculum that explores respects clay’s rich, multicultural history while exploring the diverse range of contemporary practices in the field. The program offers a rigorous exploration of ceramic materials and methods while supporting the realization of individual goals and ideas.
Four fundamental ceramics classes: Hand Building, Throwing, Intermediate, and Advanced Ceramics incorporate a variety of technical and aesthetic principles to teach the basic methods of construction and surface design for vessel and sculptural works. Intermediate Ceramics and Sculpture: Mold Making and Casting introduce production methods and the possibilities of multiples.
Advanced ceramics study entails independent research and studio practice with the goal of developing students’ interests and ideas for a series of related works. Faculty offer in-depth analysis and critique of student work. The class also focuses on ceramics materials, glaze chemistry, and glaze development.
BFA students have the option to complete a senior thesis project in their final year, combining a cohesive exhibition or screening of work, a significant piece of writing, and an oral defense, all directed by a faculty committee. Faculty also provide support to students wishing to engage in practicums and internships, both inside and outside the university.
