120 Credits Required for Graduation The university requires a minimum of 120 credits for graduation. Depending on courses selected to meet departmental and program accreditation requirements and university General Education requirements, the BFA in Art Education typically will require 121-128 credits. |
General Education Requirements: Total 39-45 cr In addition to departmental requirements, students are required to complete General Education requirements of 39- 45 credits. Students can monitor their General Education progress via their Academic Requirements Report (ARR) on SPIRE. Several courses listed as Professional Electives are also designated as General Education courses. |

Studio Art Department Information
- Students in Foundations courses are encouraged to begin taking courses for departmental Art History requirements. See the two options for meeting department Art History requirements.
- Independent Study credit in the Studio Art Program must be sponsored by full time Studio Arts faculty. BFA students can take a maximum of 12 Independent Study credits toward degree requirements.
- All Studio Art Practicum credit-based experiences must be Arts related. In addition to a practicum faculty sponsor's approval, the Undergraduate Program Director also must approve all Practicum course credits.
- Grades in Art and Art History courses must be C or above to be used to fulfill Studio Art degree requirements.
Art Education Information
- In order to complete the Undergraduate Art Education Program in four-years, Art Education students should begin Art Education discipline coursework the first semester of their junior year. Art 310, 515 and 516 are offered in the fall semester. Art 311 and 256, and Art Ed 501 and 502, are offered in the spring.
- Completion of Studio Art Foundation requirements, Art 310 or 311, and a cumulative GPA of 2.75 are required to apply to the BFA Art Education sub-plan in Studio Arts.
- Grades of B- or better in Art 310 and Art 311 are prerequisites for enrollment in Art 515 or Art 516.
- Requirements for enrollment in Art Education Student Teaching:
- Completion of Art 310, Art 311, and Art 515 or Art 516 with grades of B- or better;
- Passing scores on the Communication and Literacy Skills and Visual Arts sections of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL);
- Program coordinator and faculty recommendations.
- Typically, Student Teaching placements are in schools within 45 miles of the campus. Student teachers are not placed in schools that they attended.
- Students are required to purchase the College of Education's online assessment system, UMASS-TK20, for documentation of work in Art 515/516 and the Student Teaching Practicum.
- Students are required by the state to complete a Criminal Offender Information (CORI) check and the National Criminal Background Check (fingerprinting) as determined by each school district visited for pre- practicum and student teaching sites.
