About

The Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst offers post-secondary education in a full range of disciplines. These include painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, animation and intermedia.

Interdisciplinary study is at the core of our philosophy, and we encourage students to pursue experience across art disciplines, as well as exploring the diverse fields of arts, humanities, and sciences open to them at this premier research university.

Undergraduates majoring in Art may enroll in our BFA or BA in Studio Arts, or BFA in Art Education program. Students in all degree programs, including the Minor in Art, who are interested in graphic design and related fields are welcome to participate in elective design and creative technologies courses offered each semester.

The UMass Amherst MFA program is a three-year immersive course of study for post-graduates who wish to expand their critical thinking and disciplinary technique, and develop the experience needed for careers in academia. We also offer a Master of Arts degree in Art Education for artists who want to branch out into teaching and for current teachers to engage in advanced professional development.

Our campus boasts six galleries dedicated to exhibitions of student and professional work. Situated in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, UMass is an ideal base from which students may join the rich creative community of the artists and craftspeople who live and work in this area.

UMass is part of the Five College Consortium, making it easy for students to take advantage of classes, in, among many other fields, Film Studies, Arts Management, Museum Studies and Information Technology, offered at Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges.
