Steven Kern graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1981 with a BA in Art History and a BA in French Language and Literature. Following studies at the Johns Hopkins University, earning an MA in the History of Art, Kern assumed his first senior-level museum position as Curator of European Art and Exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts and George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum in Springfield, MA. Kern subsequently held leadership curatorial positions as Curator of Paintings at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA and Curator of European art at the San Diego Museum of Art. After 23 years in curatorial positions, Kern served as director at the William Benton Museum of Art at the University of Connecticut, executive director at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, and director and CEO at the Newark Museum. Kern currently serves as president of the Asbjorn Lunde Foundation, Inc. The Lunde Foundation continues its founder’s support of research, publishing, presentation, and practice in art and music.
