AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts student Allison Lustig, 19, of Shrewsbury, Mass., died today, March 11, in Baystate Medical Center, where she had been hospitalized in critical condition since she was struck by a car on campus Wed., March 3. The accident occurred at about 5 p.m. at the intersection of Governors Drive and Commonwealth Avenue on the northwest side of campus.
Javier Cevallos, interim vice chancellor for student affairs expressed sadness at the death, and said such a loss affects the entire University community. "The death of a young person is a tragic occasion," Cevallos said. " Our sincere sympathies are with Allison''s family and friends."
Lustig was a sophomore, majoring in psychology and education, and a member of the Honors Program. Lustig was a member of the color guard for the Minuteman Marching Band last fall, and played the flute during the spring semester in the University''s Concert Band.
George Parks, director of the band, says Lustig''s death is "a real tragedy for the band and her friends. We''re all devastated about it. Our thoughts are with her family." He said, "She was a quiet, sweet person who loved the band."
Cevallos said that University staff, as well as chaplains and counselors are available for support for all members of the campus community.
