This Week in UMass Athletics

What a time to be a sports fan in New England. The Red Sox just won their fourth championship in 14 years. The Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins are rolling as we speak, and UMass Athletics just went on a hot streak of their own.

Down in the fourth quarter without their starting quarterback, the football team came back to win on a muddy field at UConn, and the rain in the renewed chapter of a rivalry that goes all the way back to the 1800s.

The hockey team opened up Hockey East Conference play by sweeping Merrimack College, including a blowout win at home and an overtime victory on the road. Sitting at 5-1 while outscoring teams 25-12, the team has quickly ascended to the #11 national ranking in all of college hockey, and they have a chance to jump even higher when #3 Providence comes to town next week.

Field hockey and men’s soccer both won their regular season finale against St. Louis and George Washington University respectively, and both will be competing in the Atlantic-10 tournaments this weekend. Both men’s and women’s basketball teams competed in scrimmages this week with the men beating Westfield State 84-60 and the women beating UMass-Dartmouth 109-51.

Although it’s hard to take much from a scrimmage versus a division three team, it was great to see all the returning stars working with incoming freshmen. Conference player of the year candidate Luwane Pipkins cruised his way to 21 points in 20 minutes of play to lead an all-around balanced attack. For the women, seven players got into double figure scoring as they got out to a 65-16 lead at halftime and put the game in cruise control from there.

Although it’s sad to see the fall sports wrapping up soon, it looks like the Mullins Center is about to host three teams that will take a step up and compete for conference championships this winter. I just can’t wait to watch it all unfold.
