Summer Design Academy

The UMass Amherst Summer Design Academy provides an opportunity for high school students interested in architecture, landscape architecture, urban or interior design the opportunity to experience the profession and see firsthand the kinds of activities that take place in a university design program.

The Design Academy's interactive educational experiences include design exercises, hands-on building and model-making activities, a visit to an architecture office and a construction project, as well as lectures, discussions, and campus tours.

There are two ways to participate:

  • the non-residential option for students who will commute to campus each day.
  • the residential option for students who will stay on campus for the three weeks.

Both options are offered as part of Pre-College programs offered through UMass Amherst's University Without Walls.

The UMass Department of Architecture is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment in higher education, and in the profession of architecture. Students of Color who cannot meet the financial obligations of the Summer Design Academy (SDA) are encouraged to apply for a scholarship. Please see Tuition & Fees to learn how to apply.
