UMass BRUT is a collaborative advocacy group of UMass Amherst and UMass Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students dedicated to celebrating, preserving and reimagining the campuses' Brutalist architecture. DOCOMOMO has recognized the UMass BRUT executive committee, which includes Shelby Schrank '20M.Arch, who helped to establish the group and Lincoln Nemetz-Carlson '23M.Arch with a 2022 Award of Excellence.
Nemetz-Carlson is the designer of the UMass Amherst Brutalist Campus Guide, and Kayla Sit '24BS Arch assisted as an intern.
Jury member Angel Ayón, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, NOMA noted, "This effort is an exemplary and responsible stewardship of a massive educational site. We know the rhetoric they are dealing with – Brutalism is ugly – but they leaned into it and made a case for why it is important. It elevates Brutalism to a new height where it can be recognized for its contribution to 20th century architecture.”
