Professor Joseph Krupczynski, along with five UMass architecture students attended the “Design Futures Student Leadership Forum” from June 2 – 6 held at Tulane University in New Orleans. Undergraduate students Ivy Ackerman, Kevin Jimenez, Manu Klenner, Hector Martinez, and graduate student Bella Donovan attended the interdisciplinary convening that fosters capacity-building for future architects and designers hoping to use design as a tool for social equity and positive change. Through a series of workshops students critically considered power, privilege, and positionality in the practice of community-engaged design and explored the role of design to address and dismantle systemic oppression in the built environment. Inspired by the workshops and cultural and historic background of New Orleans, students expressed a newfound appreciation of social engagement and community-driven architectural practices.
