We celebrate the elevation of our dear colleague and Senior Campus Planner for the university, Ludmilla Pavlova-Gillham to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Only 3% of AIA members receive this distinction. Since arriving at UMass in 1998, Pavlova-Gillham has executed a mind-boggling range of work, from countless space utilization and feasibility studies, system and project planning, and most notably, authoring the first UMass Amherst Sustainability Plan as well as the Sustainability chapter in the 2012 Master Plan for the campus. From the get-go Pavlova-Gillham was a strong proponent of Sustainability, arguably long before it was on the university radar. Her decades-long efforts to make it a university priority is one reason that UMass is today considered a leader in carbon mitigation and sustainability. We thank her for her remarkable generosity towards our program, providing in-depth information about campus issues, thoughtful commentary on reviews, and mentoring countless numbers of our students employed by Facilities and Planning over the years.
