A recent Academic Quality Assessment and Development (AQAD) review concluded that the UMass Amherst Department of Architecture is in “strong shape” and exceptionally well-positioned for future growth. The review team praised the department’s leadership, faculty excellence, innovative curriculum, and supportive student culture, identifying UMass Architecture as a national leader in sustainable design, mass timber research, community engagement, and architectural education.
Reviewers highlighted the Design Building as a transformative asset that serves as both a world-class academic facility and a living laboratory for interdisciplinary learning, sustainable design, and applied research. The department’s public-interest design initiatives, community partnerships, and commitment to the university’s land-grant mission were also recognized as distinctive strengths.
The report commended the department’s successful NAAB reaccreditation, strong student outcomes, growing faculty achievements, and welcoming, collaborative environment. It also identified opportunities for continued growth, including revitalization of the MDes program, expansion of the accelerated BS-to-MArch pathway, increased graduate student funding, enhanced communications and outreach, and additional staffing support.
The review gave special recognition to the long-term leadership of the department noting that under Steve Schreiber’s guidance the department has established itself as an aspirational peer among architecture programs across the country.
The review concluded that the department’s strong foundation, accomplished faculty, innovative programs, and culture of collaboration position it to continue expanding its impact on the profession, the Commonwealth, and the broader field of architectural education.
