FAQ specific to the Department of Architecture
Are the department’s classes being cancelled?
All in-person classes and studios will be suspended and replaced with remote instruction. Classes are NOT cancelled – they have changed delivery platforms. Other accommodations can be made for those who are having difficulty on a case by case basis, and in consultation with your instructor. After observing spring break 3/15-3/22, classes have been resuming on-line on Monday, 3/23.
Instructors will be in touch with their students via UMass email with information about how their specific courses will be conducted and with updated syllabi.
International Students who must remain on campus because of extenuating circumstances will also receive on-line instructions and will be subject to the same restrictions as all other students.
Are department events being canceled?
All spring semester public events, exhibitions, and spring lectures scheduled by the Department of Architecture are cancelled.
End-of-the-semester events including HFA/Architecture/UMASS McGuirk commencement reception are cancelled.
Are the department’s facilities open?
The department’s facilities including Trimble Lab (DB360), Shop Labs and studios in Design Building are not available for Architecture Undergraduate or Graduate students.
Faculty and staff will be available via email and phone, and the department will be minimally staffed in Design Building. To minimize health risks to our community, students and families are asked to complete administrative matters via phone or email to avoid personal contact. In all situations, please call first before coming to the department.
Are tours available for prospective students and other visitors?
Not at this time. Please check back for information about when these will resume. You may contact Jean Crossman, Program Coordinator at (jcrossman@umass.edu) or Erika Zekos, Undergraduate Advisor (ezekos@umass.edu) with questions on the program, curriculum or future tour availability next fall.
What will happen to my studio and work in progress left in the department?
Most students who were working in Design Building have retrieved their items from their studios prior to the Governor's Stay at Home Advisory. Swipe card access has not been turned off yet, we would recommend that students not enter the building without permission. Trimble Laboratory swipe access is not available to any students at this time. Individual undergraduate or graduate studios and classrooms are not open for use by students and materials left in these spaces will remain safely locked in studio.
How will I be advised for registration?
We are working on an alternate solution for advising and will be in contact with students throughout this remote learning process. Registration has been extended to accommodate this.
