Architecture student Kylie Horne (BS Arch‘27) (shown, second from left with her teammates) was a key contributor to the UMass Preconstruction Team at the Associated Schools of Construction competition in Albany, NY. As a member of the team of primarily Building and Construction Technology majors, she created a clear construction animation showing site flow, phasing, and safety considerations, and applied her architectural expertise to strengthen the project’s logistics plan. Kylie also presented the team’s staffing and procurement strategy, outlining how labor, subcontractors, and long-lead items would be managed to keep the project on schedule. The UMass team won second place in the competition which brings together universities from across the Northeast region to solve real, industry-based construction challenges under tight deadlines. Teams step into the roles of project managers, estimators, schedulers, and project engineers, operating as if we were the project delivery team for an active job site.
