The UMass Amherst chapter of the American Institute of Architectural Students is an active student organization focused on programs benefiting students in their professional development. AIAS sponsors numerous professional and social events throughout the year including mentorship nights, portfolio reviews, design charrettes, and field trips. The AIAS also maintains a small materials and supplies shop for commonly used studio materials.

SUMAC is the student voice for sustainability on campus, providing information and a forum for discussion of sustainable inititives. This group is dedicated to the research, education, and support essential to resolving issues of environmental sustainability on the UMass campus and in the surrounding communities.

The student-led UMass Permaculture Committee works to bring educational workshops, experiential learning experiences and participatory, community building projects to the student body. UMass is one of the only public universities in the country implementing sustainable permaculture gardens directly on campus each year and serving the local, healthy produce in the university's dining commons.
